Road crew flagger wearing the GAME 1370 hi-vis bomber in a work zone
ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 · Garment requirements

More material. More of the body. More distance.

Every high-visibility class is the same idea taken further: fluorescent background so you're seen by day, reflective tape so headlights find you at night, and coverage of more of the body as the hazard grows. Scroll and watch one garment climb from Class 1 to Class 3.

Class 1Type O · Off-road

For work where the wearer can give full attention to approaching traffic and stays well separated from it.

Traffic, if any, is moving at 25 mph or slower. Struck-by risk comes from carts, forklifts and yard equipment.

Class 2Type R · Roadway

For work near traffic moving faster than 25 mph, in bad weather, or against complex backgrounds.

Also covers tasks that pull the worker's attention away from approaching vehicles. The minimum for highway right-of-way work.

Class 3Type R · Roadway

The highest level. For workers facing serious hazards and high task loads who need attention on the arms and legs as well as the torso.

Sleeves with reflective bands are required. A sleeveless vest on its own is never Class 3, whatever its area.

Class ESupplemental · Pants, shorts, gaiters

Worn with a Class 2 or Class 3 top, the whole outfit becomes Class 3.

Two materials, two jobs

Drag the handle. Fluorescent fabric does the work in daylight. Retroreflective tape sends a headlight beam straight back to the driver after dark. A rating measures both.

Fluorescent background

Converts UV into visible light, so the garment reads brighter than its surroundings from dawn to dusk. This is the in² of background material in the chart.

Retroreflective tape

Bounces light back toward its source. To a driver at night the bands appear to switch on. This is the in² of reflective material, placed to show the shape of a person.

Type

Where the garment is worn

Type OOff-road

Struck-by hazards from equipment and vehicles, but no exposure to public-road traffic. Warehouses, plant yards, parking.

Class 1 only

Exposure to traffic on a public right-of-way or in a temporary traffic control zone. Most GAME hi-vis styles are Type R.

Class 2 or 3

I-684 · 5-point breakaway

Decoration

Look up a style. See where it prints.

Type a style number and the card shows the garment front and back, where it prints, and the maximum size for each area. The numbers live on the product, so this card, the product page and the decoration department all read the same figures.

Logos of any size

A company logo may be added at any size. Under ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 it is no longer deducted from the garment's background area.

72 in² of contrasting material

Identification panels, lettering and logos of contrasting non-compliant material are limited to 465 cm² (72 in²) in total on the front and/or rear, and that area may count toward the minimum visible background.

Keep the tape clear

Reflective bands stay continuous. Print above, below or between them, never across.

Done in-house

Embroidery, heat transfer, screen print and reflective decoration, all applied at GAME before the order ships.

Type a style number to see its print zones.

Dimensions in inches, based on a size SM. Back measurements are the suggested maximum print area and vary by size.

Decoration across the tape voids the rating The reflective bands are part of what the garment was certified on: how much reflective material shows, how wide each band is, and that it runs unbroken around the body. Any print, embroidery or heat transfer laid over or across a band takes away area the class requires, and the garment no longer meets ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 — it can no longer be worn as a rated garment. Decorate above, below or between the bands, never across them.

Questions dealers ask

Straight answers

Can I wear a Class E rain pant by itself to meet a hi-vis requirement?

No. Class E items are supplemental. Pair a 1450 or 1555E with a Class 2 or Class 3 top and the outfit as a whole is rated Class 3.

Is a Class 2 vest enough for highway work?

Class 2 is the minimum for work in a highway right-of-way. Your safety officer decides whether the speed, lighting, weather or the job itself calls for Class 3.

Why isn't a big vest Class 3?

Class 3 requires reflective material on the sleeves, so the wearer is recognized as a person through a full range of motion. A sleeveless garment cannot be Class 3 regardless of how much tape it carries. GAME's I-678E and I-495E have short sleeves with tape, which is how they earn the rating.

Can we print our logo on a rated garment?

Yes. Under ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 a company logo of any size may be added without deducting it from the background area. Contrasting panels, lettering and logos of non-compliant material are limited to 72 sq in total on the front and back. Each product page shows its own imprintable areas.

Our older garments are labeled 107-2015. Are they still compliant?

Yes. The 2020 revision changed how garments are categorized and labeled, not the protection they provide. GAME certifies that all of its ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 garments meet the standard.

Are black-bottom and two-tone styles rated the same as solid ones?

Yes. Every colorway of a rated GAME style carries the same class. The rating is based on the fluorescent and reflective area actually on the garment.

What is the Public Safety Vest?

Police, fire and EMS need access to belt-mounted equipment and a vest that tears away if caught. The I-684 is cut shorter for that reason and meets the public-safety provisions of ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 (Type P), which the standard absorbed from the old ANSI/ISEA 207 vest standard.

GAME certifies that all of its ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 garments provide the same level of protection and visibility as before the revision. The changes in the revised standard affect categorization and labeling only. GAME offers more than 30 ANSI/ISEA styles.
